Frequently Asked Questions - February 1, 2006

Q: Are you a chef?
A: Chef Eric is not a certified chef. On stage, he’s a chef. In rehearsal, he’s a chef. With musical composition, he’s a chef. In the kitchen, he’s had the titles of assistant chef, kitchen manager, and assistant to the executive chef. But he’s not a chef. Close enough for rock ‘n’ roll, though.

Q: Why the Chef Eric Band?
A: Well, it’s a mixture of elements and it’s put together like a recipe. So…

Q:What kind of music do you play?
A: This is the one we don’t like to answer. Since you’ve read this far, I’ll give it a try (but it’s a secret recipe so we’d appreciate it if you’d keep it under your hat, so to speak).

In a large stock pot over medium heat, add
1 monster drummer
1 groovy bass player
2 guitars, one red, one blue.
Add one heavy duty soulful singer and fold in gently.
Add one grated Appalachian washboard.
Increase heat to high until the mixture bubbles.
Turn out onto stage and cook under hot lights until mixture glows.

Q: Is there is a less/more technical answer?
A: It is a fusion of different traditional styles of music, all wrapped up in a blues band. Some bands we love, in no particular order, include John Hiatt, The Kentucky Headhunters, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter, Willie Dixon, and especially good old 1970s Am radio, funk, soul, R&B, and rock ‘n’ roll included. Which hopefully answers the question and explains the length of the answer.

Q: You have a washboard player in your band?! Really!?
A: Yes! And we love her!

Q: How long have you been playing together?
A: About five years.

Q:How did you all get together?
A: It was a dark and stormy night… Just kidding. Eric chose the players from various live clubs in West Virginia and Maryland. The band members were chosen for the way they play live. Period.

Q: There are two guitarists on the CD? How do we tell who played what?

A: There are two ways. Except for "Because I Found You" where Jeff plays a Les Paul and Eric plays a dobro, Jeff plays a Stratocaster that often has a kind of edgy traditional blues sound to it, while Eric plays the other guitars. The easier way to tell them apart is that Eric is a little bit taller than Jeff.

Q: Are you a real band or is this a studio thing?
A: I think the best way to describe us is a family. We celebrate each others triumphs and mourn losses. We’re there for each other, besides playing and performing. Love, joy, sorrow, dysfunction, laughter – it’s all there, and that’s the way we like it.
